UN Public Service Award for SWAGAT: Uncommon win for the common man

by Narendra Modi 25. June 2010 15:41
Dear friends,

We eagerly awaited the monsoon rains last week, but it went by in disappointment. In some places it did rain; while there was no sign of rain in many places. Let us pray to God that Lord Varunadev blesses us with bountiful of rain soon.

While we were waiting for rains there was a good news which made all us proud. I wish to share this news with you.

You must be aware of Gujarat government’s initiative, named the State Wide Attention on Grievances with Application of Technology (SWAGAT) launched in April of 2003. I am happy to say SWAGAT has won the United Nations Public Service Award in the category of ‘Improving Transparency, Accountability and Responsibility in Public Service’ for 2010 which is an internationally recognized award.

In a democracy the highest power rests with the people. And therefore grievances of the people and their petitions need to be disposed off in a manner that justice is done. This is an acid test for any good governance. It is in this connection that the state government had brought about SWAGAT online redress of public grievance project and due to proper use of technology we could achieve this success. In future too I am sure the people will be getting quick redress of their grievances through SWAGAT online.

In the year of Swarnim Jayanti-2010 Gujarat had the honour of being recognized internationally with the United Nations conferring this award. This is indeed a proud moment for all of us.

Who knows, the next Vishwanathan Anand may be from our state !

by Narendra Modi 17. June 2010 17:37
Friends,

The recent rains have been a refreshing change by bringing down the mercury and infusing new life into trees, plants and even people everywhere. Perhaps there is a lesson for us here – eventhe biggest and most refreshing showers are but a collection of individual drops.

Along the same lines is the endeavor to breathe new life into chess in Gujarat – the Swarnim Gujarat Chess Mahotsav. TheMahotsav opened today with me facing the King of Chess, World Champion Vishwanathan Anand, across the board. The aim of the Mahotsav is to popularize chess at every school across the length and breadth of Gujarat. Like the individual drops of rain, when every student takes to chess, Gujarat will surely produce a shower of talents in the world arena. Who knows, the next Vishwanathan Anand may be from our state !

My speech on the occasion of inauguration of "Gujarat Swarnim Chess Mahotsav" given below:

"Suraj Sankalp" convention - BJP rallying the nation around good governance

by Narendra Modi 5. June 2010 12:50
“Suraj Sankalp,” the two-day National Convention of the BJP on Good Governance has begun today. It is one of the best initiatives ever taken by any party towards improving the quality of governance in the country. I would say it is vitally necessary for us to understand that pro-people and pro-active steps cannot come by merely paying lip service to good governance unless it is backed by a people centric developmental process.

Political will and political process lead to sustainable good governance and people are mature enough to differentiate bad politics from good governance.  I thank Nitin Gadkariji for this wonderful initiative in creating awareness on good governance and also my party in providing me an opportunity to share my ideas. I hope the stage is set in triggering better ideas to come forth from all the stakeholders in contributing their mite to improve good governance in the country. I am sharing my speech with you by putting it in the public domain.

The salient points of my speech are as below:
